Chapter Eleven

Massive, seemingly impenetrable, high stone walls surrounded the fortress city of the werewolf clan. The imposing city rose from the barren landscape like a phoenix. In front of the entry gate, a moat-like ditch filled with muddy water and who knew what else protected the walls from the mortals crossing. I stared at the massive structures, taking mental note of its vulnerabilities.

I quickly noticed how easy it would be for my clan to scale the wall of the fortress and climb to the top. But from there, the top of the wall, the profuse large jagged metal spikes covered in silver would be a challenge.

Jerico noticed my concerned stare. “Not only will it be difficult for your kind to jump over, but you’ll have to deal with the silver and the electrical current.”

“Electrical current?”

“If you grab the bars or land on the spikes, you’ll be fried from the inside out. King Baraz thought of everything.”

I slowed down, thinking about Ori trying to cross over into the compound. I wanted to go back and warn him—warn them all—but the guards had already released the city’s drawbridge when they spotted Jerico coming toward the ditch.

This was my chance to get inside, and I couldn’t go back to warn the rest. They’d find a way over or not, but I’d get my sister out, no matter what.

As we crossed the bridge, I noticed the putrid odor of the werewolves who lived behind the walls growing stronger. What seemed to affect my delicate vampire senses didn’t faze Jerico whatsoever. The closer we got to the open gate, the faster he dragged his wounded body to get inside.

An odd anticipation flowed through me, as we got closer to the enormous gate. When we stepped inside, four fully turned monstrous werewolves greeted us by stepping in front of us.

Their massive bodies towered over us. Their faces were twisted into a snarl. Their teeth bared through their taut lips. Saliva dripped from their open mouths as a guttural growl came up from their throats and assaulted my senses. My body sensed tension and started to make its changes slowly from human to vampire.

“Don’t!” Jerico demanded.

“It’s a standoff.”

“It’s not. They are doing their job. They aren’t like us. Their purpose in life is to solely guard the city.”

“They look like werewolves.”

“Well, they are werewolves, but they don’t change back and forth.”

I shook my head. “I don’t get it.”

“They are like your Sombras, loyal to a fault and used to protect the grounds. They’re like what humans call guard dogs.”

“They stay like that?”

“They’re not shifters.” Jerico said, feverish sweat beads now glistening over his entire face. He swiped his forehead with his sleeve. Jerico took a step closer to the guards, still leaving at least fifty feet between them and us. I stepped closer to him, sensing danger. He put his hand back to keep me away.

A husky growl released from one of the guards.

Jerico stood as straight as his injured body could muster and his face grimaced in pain.
